Nitrous OxideIt's not unusual for some people to be anxious about going to the dentist. Whether fearful of pain, tooth sensitivity, gagging or simply lying prone with the mouth open, adults and children can both benefit from the relaxation produced by nitrous oxide sedation, or what has been long known as "laughing gas."
What is nitrous oxide sedation?
Nitrous oxide sedation has a long history of use in dental procedures. A highly safe relaxing agent, nitrous oxide is administered in the dental chair via a mask placed over the face. The patient slowly breathes in the nitrous oxide, mixed with oxygen, and the result is a relaxed and happy state. Some individuals even feel a bit giddy from the inhalation; hence, the term "laughing gas."
Odorless and colorless, nitrous oxide sedation is administered by the dentist. He may also use local injections of novacaine for procedures that typically produce discomfort. The great benefits of the inhaled sedation are that patients:
  • relax
  • are fully awake
  • feel comfortable in the dental chair
  • can drive home from the appointment because the effects of the gas wear off quickly

Who should use nitrous oxide sedation?

This conscious sedation has long been heralded as safe for the very youngest of dental patients to the most senior. Dentists and researchers have been able to study the gas, its uses and its effects for decades and praise it as safe, with practically no side effects and no allergic reactions. Some minor cautions in the use of nitrous oxide are:

  1. It should not be administered to women who are in their first 3 months of pregnancy.
  2. People with chronic lung conditions such as emphysema or who have just had ear surgery should not use it.
  3. Nausea and vomiting has been experienced in less than one percent of dental patients nitrous oxide.

Talk with a dentist about sedation dentistry

Anyone who is fearful about dental care runs the risk of postponing it, and procrastination can lead to serious tooth and gum issues and an adverse impact on overall health. The answer to anxiety can be as simple as nitrous oxide. Many patients use this conscious sedation for everything from a simple cleaning to fillings and crowns and even more complex procedures. The dental care professional will discuss your medical history and explain the details of nitrous oxide sedation. Together, patient and dentist can decide if it is the right choice.
