What is scaling and root planing?

This non-surgical periodontal therapy is one of the best ways to treat severe and persistent forms of gum disease. Your Vallejo, CA dentist may recommend scaling and root planing if other, more conservative treatments haven’t been effective. This treatment is used to clean the gums and the roots of your teeth to remove plaque and tartar buildup.

Why is scaling and root planing recommended?

If your Vallejo, CA dentist has noticed that the gums have already started to pull away from your teeth, or that the roots of your teeth have tartar buildup, then we will advise that you get this periodontal therapy to treat your condition.

How will my Vallejo, CA perform my scaling and root planing treatment?

The treatment is performed in our office under local anesthesia and may be performed in one or two different visits. The anesthesia will eliminate any discomfort during your procedure. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, we will use special dental tools to remove tartar, bacteria and plaque from above and below the gumline. We may even place antibiotics into the infected pockets of the gums to reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth.

After this procedure, your Vallejo, CA dentist may recommend coming back after several weeks to make sure that the pockets have healed and that everything looks healthy.

How effective is scaling and root planing?

While scaling and root planing has proven to stop gum disease from progressing, a lot will also depend on how well you care for your smile after treatment. Continue to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly. If you properly care for your teeth and gums then you’ll notice that your gums will become strong and healthy again.
