According to the American Dental Association, about 47 percent of American adults have periodontal disease (i.e. gum disease). When leftgum disease unchecked, this condition is damaging to both your oral and systemic health. However, the good news is that periodontitis can be managed with the help of your dentist in Vallejo, CA, Dr. David Gordon! Read on to learn more about the dangers of gum disease, how to avoid developing it in the first place, and how to go about treating it. After all, you and your smile depend on healthy gums!

What is periodontal disease?

It's an infection of the soft tissue and bone that support your teeth. When oral bacteria collects on tooth surfaces and interdental spaces, it results in plaque and hard tartar, both of which can erode gum tissue and the bone surrounding tooth roots.

The resulting signs may not be obvious to the patient at first, but when left unnoticed and untreated, they progress, leading to tooth mobility as well as systemic problems such as Type-2 diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and more.

What are the signs of gum disease?

During an oral examination at our Vallejo office, we can better observe the signs of gum disease. Dr. Gordon always includes a measure of gum pockets (the space between the gums and tooth roots) with every six-month examination and cleaning, resulting in a quick and accurate discovery of the condition.

Signs of mild gingivitis include redness and bleeding on the gums, as well as the development of gum pockets. Luckily, gum disease at this stage can be healed with a thorough cleaning and careful at-home brushing and flossing.

More advanced gum disease shows these symptoms:

  • Mobile teeth
  • Pus at the gum line
  • Exposed tooth roots
  • Deep gum pockets (> 3mm)
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Bad breath which does not respond to mouthwash or tooth brushing
  • Extreme dental sensitivity
  • Reddened, tender gums

Treating gum disease

Report any bleeding upon brushing and flossing to Dr. Gordon right away. Advanced problems will require deep tooth scaling, root planing, and the installation of antibiotics. Your dentist will place you on an at-home maintenance plan and schedule follow-up visits to ensure that your gums are healing. Many patients require more frequent in-office cleanings to keep gums healthy.

Of course, prevention is your best cure. To avoid gum problems altogether, be sure to:

  • Eat a healthy diet, low in carbs and high in fiber, low-fat proteins, and water.
  • Brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush. Avoid brushing too vigorously.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque.
  • Get six-month cleanings and check-ups with your dentist.
  • Stop smoking, for tobacco contains toxins which damage your soft oral tissues.
