Have you ever had an oral injury or a bad toothache and not known the best course of action? Sure, we all have had emergency dental emergencysituations, but your Vallejo, CA, dentist, Dr. David Gordon, wants you informed about pressing dental needs so together, you can optimize the result.

What is a dental emergency?

Just like a medical emergency, it's something that cannot wait. The American Dental Association (ADA) reports that non-traumatic dental emergencies seen in hospital ERs rise in number annually in the US, making an unnecessary burden on hospitals and their staffs.

Instead, if you experience an urgent dental issue, call Dr. Gordon's office for immediate and compassionate advice and a same-day visit as needed. Dr. Gordon treats everything from lost restorations to knocked out teeth, toothaches and more.

However, before you see your Vallejo dentist, there are stabilization measures you can take for yourself or a loved one in need.

First aid for dental problems

Here are common dental emergencies and appropriate first aid measures for each.

Tooth avulsion A knocked out tooth may be replanted and saved if your dentist treats it within an hour of injury. Before seeing Dr. Gordon, try replacing the tooth by grasping it by the crown and putting its roots back in the empty socket. Hold it in place while going to the dental office, or if you cannot, put the tooth in a sealed container with water, milk or over the counter tooth preservative and bring it to Dr. Gordon. Most replanted teeth survive for many years.

Cracked tooth Save any fragments and bring them to Dr. Gordon who may be able to restore the tooth using composite resin. A severely cracked tooth may require root canal therapy and/or a crown. Also, if you lose a filling or other restoration, bring the pieces with you. Cover any jagged tooth edges with orthodontic wax or denture adhesive to avoid oral irritation.

Jaw dislocation or profuse bleeding These really are medical emergencies and require a trip to the hospital ER. Dr. Gordon will follow-up with your injury after you are stable.

Foreign object stuck in between teeth A toothpick, piece of bone or some food may lodge between tightly spaced teeth. Gently rinse your mouth with warm water, and use waxed dental floss to work around the material to remove it.

Dental abscess This infection exhibits symptoms of throbbing toothache, drainage, redness and swelling of the gums and drainage. Call the office for an appointment. In the meantime, apply ice to the jaw, take over the counter pain relievers as necessary, and rinse the mouth with salt water.
