Dental implants not only restore your smile, but offer several other important benefits. Dr. David Gordon, your Vallejo, CA dentist, explains several advantages of dental implants.
Dental implants keep your jawbone strong
The roots of your teeth constantly stimulate your jawbone and help keep it strong. When you lose a tooth, the section of your jawbone underneath the lost tooth no longer receives any stimulation. Eventually, the jawbone begins to recede and weaken. If you've lost several teeth, the problem can become more pronounced. A receding jawbone may even lead to facial sagging and additional tooth loss if the bone can no longer support your remaining teeth.
Dental implants replace the roots of your teeth and help keep your jawbone strong. Your Vallejo dentist places a titanium implant in a hole in your jawbone during the first step of the implant procedure. During the next three to six months, the implant bonds to your bone in a process called osseointegration. Once the implant is fully osseointegrated, it's as as strong as your natural tooth roots. Your dentist then connects a crown to the top of the implant to replace the visible part of your lost tooth.
Dental implants help you avoid cavities
Your teeth help keep surrounding teeth straight and upright. When one tooth is extracted, the surrounding teeth begin to overlap as they drift toward the opening. It's difficult to remove plaque from overlapping teeth, which can increase your risk of tooth decay. Dental implants keep your teeth in position and help you avoid cavities.
Implants make eating easier
It's harder to bite and chew when one or more teeth are missing. Implants restore your ability to eat normally after tooth loss. If you've lost an entire row of teeth, you might think that full dentures are your only option. While dentures effectively replace lost teeth, they reduce your biting power, making it impossible to eat some hard foods. Thanks to advancements in dental technology, just two to four implants can support an entire row of implant-supported dentures. Since the dentures are attached to implants, they're more secure than traditional dentures and make eating a much more pleasant experience.
